When I first started here at the Law Firm of I'll Never Tell Lest I get Fired for Blogging About Work I was in awe of one of the lawyers, Kiki (yep, Ima calling her Kiki, deal) because she was fashionable and fun and pretty and seemed to have it all together. She was my fashion guru, I took tips based on what she was wearing, wished I had the drive and eye to pick out the things she did, listened as she told people about her Nordstroms/Anthropologie obsession but also regaled us with the fact that she still did shopping at The Pink Zone and Alloy.
Don't let anybody ever tell you that life isn't a fashion show, LIFE IS A FASHION SHOW. And the old saying "dress for the job you want, not the job you have" is an old saying for a reason (and not just because it's all over Career Builder). Back when I was a file clerk, I dressed like a file clerk (all black pants and thrown on shirts and/or jeans and a tshirt). And now that I'm supposed to be career mama, with a side of "ex-professional", I want to think I've learned a little something. (Like how in my last job it was all about dressing the dowdy, resigned, conservative part). Much of what I have learned is from good old KiKi, the lawyer.
She's an ex-Chargers girl, has her own condo in PB, is a LAWER for crying out loud, young, and fun, heads on Mexican cruises for no other reason then she feels like it, gets her hair did and has the perfect tan. She goes to 80's parties with her friends, goes for runs on her days off, swears she's never eating pizza again, but does... has the perfect bangs (oh man I need a haircut).
And on some days, when I see her roll in at 9:30 and out at 3:30 I think "screw this life dream of becoming a writer, I'm going straight up lawyer style... I'm gonna get my condo in PB, my hybrid car, my cute shoes from Nordy's."
I'm not going all single white female on her, don't worry... but I do get to work awful close with her now and I have come to realize that I really am growing up because there are some days when she rolls in, cute skirt, hair in a pony tail and I have on a very tasteful, cute skirt, hair in a bun (oh snap, it's PONY TAILS that are in this season). I finally felt like I was getting somewhere because she complimented my shoes, instead of the other way around.
And today... today we're wearing the same shirt. Off white, mock turtle neck... classic.
"So I see you got the memo," she said when I stopped in her office.
I sure did Fashion GURU, I sure did.
