You know why I'm not a film reviewer (aside from the fact that nobody has actually ever asked me to be a film reviewer and that if they did I'd probably just call and ask my Dad what he thought about said film and use his review because, really, I do that about so many things any way...), because my film reviews tend to go something like this "it was good."
On Saturday we went to watch the IMAX film: The Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk, over there in Balboa Park. Robert Redford goes ahead and narrates the river adventure, starring Wade Davis, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and their teenage daughters (cutie and cutie in a bathing suit, respectively). The movie has a mostly eco-friendly agenda, outlines the destruction and decay of the once beautiful and thriving Colorado River, because of all those water mongers in Las Vegas (and farmers too). With the Grand Canyon background, the Dave Matthews easy listening songs AND an American Indian Guide... you've got all the trappings for a weird 2008 Lewis and Clark expedition... but instead get an enjoyable film with a side of vertigo (because IMAX is like being there, man,
The river... is at risk and once you get a look at this beautiful country, you're bound to be more then happy to go home and fix your leaky faucet and/or get a better hose for washing your car.
The movie was good.
I even got a little teary when we learned that our actions, damming the river, using too much water, gambling too much in sin city, leaves the river high and dry once it reaches Mexico, where families that once lived in thriving fishing towns now barely make ends meet, where the river no longer flows all the way to the ocean.
The movie was good. You should go see it if you get a chance, or, go here.
P.S. And if you don't walk out wanting to head on over to the Grand Canyon to go for a river adventure yourself... well then there is just no hope for you at all... water waster!
